6-Run Rally in Game Two Gives Panthers Sweep of Indiana Tech on Sunday

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - Davenport scored seven runs in each game of today's double-header as they swept Indiana Tech and took three of four games in the season series. Davenport is now 28-19 on the year and .500 in league action at 8-8.
Brandon Romero got the ball in the opening game today as DU was trying to rebound from a tough loss on Saturday. After giving up a run in the top half of the first, Matt Collins tied the game in the bottom half bringing around Joe Hill who led the game off with a single. Tech then retook the lead in the 3rd inning before Davenport scored four runs in the bottom of the 3rd which was highlighted by a three-run bomb off the bat of Joe Freist.
Romero then proceeded to get through the fifth inning while allowing only seven hits and striking out three in route to his fifth win of the season. With a 6-3 lead in his final inning, the DU defense allowed two un-earned runs but it was not enough as the Panthers posted an opening 7-5 victory.
Game two started amidst a steady light rain but the bats came out hot for the Warriors as they posted two runs in the top of the first. DU got on the board in the 3rd inning when Joe Hill came around to score on a single by Brian Spykerman to cut the lead in half.
The pitchers were then solid for both teams until the bottom of the sixth when DU scored six runs to take a 7-2 lead in which they hung onto for the sweep of the double-header. Derrick Gentile got things going with a single that was followed by a walk to Joe Freist and Jake Loomans getting hit by a pitch to load the bases. Tommy Enslen then had a great at bat which resulted in an RBI ground out
After a walk to Tyler Thurlow gave the Panthers a 3-2 lead, Joe Hill singled through the left side that scored Freist. James Folske and Matt Collins followed with two more singles with Folske coming around to score the final run of the inning.
Bobby Kwekel came in to get the final three outs and got two pop outs and a ground out for the DU victory. Jarrett Luyk picked up the win in relief for DU after a solid start from Wesley Trimpe.
Davenport will host non-conference foe Alma College on Tuesday before hosting Concordia University on Friday to begin a four game set with the Cardinals. Friday's double-header will begin at 1:00 PM.
