Game 1 Box Score Game 2 Box Score

BEREA, KY- The Davenport University Baseball team won the Diamond Classic this past weekend in its first ever regular season weekend trip. The Panthers were led by Matt Collins who hit .750 on the weekend while driving in 10 RBI's, and also stole four bases. DU now stands at 16-3 on the year with a trip to Ohio this weekend for six games.

The first game would start fast as both teams hit well bringing the score to 3-2 in favor of Davenport after the first inning. DU would be the team to sustain that momentum as they would score four in the second while giving up only one. The game would slow down through the middle innings as the score at the end of the fifth inning was 8-3 in favor of the Panthers. Davenport would close the door on the Mountaineers outscoring Berea 7-3 in the last two innings to leave the final score at 15-6 giving DU the victory. Andy Westerburg recorded the win as he struck out five.

The final game of the weekend featured a slow and evenly matched game through the first four innings as the Panthers led 4-1 heading into the fifth. The DU sluggers would come alive after all nine starters scored runs to place the mercy warning on Berea. The Mountaineers would not answer the call as James Folske touched the bag to record the final out of the weekend off a slow rolling grounder to first. The win would go to Jarrett Luyk after he recorded 7 strikeouts in only five innings.

The day's top performers were Matt Collins who went 4/5 and had 4 RBI in the first game and Joe Freist who was 2/3 with 2 RBI's in the first game. Ryan Lind also stepped up in the second game when he hit a two-run shot to left field.

The Panthers will carry their five game win streak into the state of Ohio next weekend as they travel to Bluffton University Friday for a double header and face John Carroll and Urbana University in Urbana on Saturday.
