GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - A late first half goal was not enough as DU gave up two unanswered second half goals to Cornerstone today as they fell 3-1. The loss drops the Panthers to 5-5-0 on the year and 3-3-0 in WHAC play.
In a tight race in the WHAC standings, the Panthers entered today's contest with cross-town rival Cornerstone needing a win to keep pace with Aquinas. Unfortunately, two unanswered goals in the second half led to a 3-1 loss to the Golden Eagles.
After an own goal put the Panthers down 1-0 in the 19th minute, Davenport got a great play from Alex Boehm (Stevensville, Mich.) as he fought through the defense and tied the game with his seventh goal of the season.
Coming out of halftime with a 1-1 game, the Panthers defense held tough for the opening 15 minutes but allowed a through ball in the middle to a streaking Cornerstone forward and he beat DU keeper Jeremy Novakoski (Grand Rapids, Mich.) to give CU the 2-1 lead.
Less than seven minutes later, the Eagles struck again on a throw in that they headed in and that would make the final outcome of 3-1. DU did have a few good chances down the stretch but shots from Benjamin Behnke (Gull Lake, Mich.) and Brad Nyhoff (Hudsonville, Mich.) were just off the mark.
Davenport managed just seven shots on net compared to 11 from the Golden Eagles and Novakoski finished with 8 saves in his first appearance of the season.
The loss sends DU to 5-5-0 on the year and 3-3-0 in league action. The Panthers will hit the road for their next three games before hosting Saginaw Valley State on October 25.
The previously postponed game against Madonna University has been rescheduled for Wednesday October 28 in Livonia at 4:00 PM
