GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - In a very physical and slow paced game, the Davenport Women's Soccer team came away with a 0-0 tie against cross-town rival Cornerstone. The draw, which is the first of the year for the Panthers, leaves them at 5-4-1 overall and 4-2-1 in league play.
After defeating Cornerstone a few weeks ago 3-0 on their field, the Panthers knew they were in for a battle and the Golden Eagles actually controlled the play for most of the first 30 minutes. DU did get a few chances on net in the opening half, but stellar play by each of the teams' defense proved to be the difference.
Late in the second half, DU again had some great opportunities but shots from Ashley Phillips (Stevensville, Mich.) and Leah Vanlaan (Caledonia, Mich.) were just off the mark. The two teams headed into overtime after a scoreless regulation game and DU went at it playing a man down after two yellow cards sent Daniella Bugli (Shelby Twp., Mich.) out of the game late in the second half.
The DU defense again held tough and each keeper had to make only one save in the two extra frames but it was the one by the CU goalie that was huge with less than 3:00 left in the second overtime.
Davenport moves to 5-4-1 on the year and 4-2-1 in league action as they will take on Judson University on Wednesday in Elgin, IL. Their next WHAC match will be on Saturday, October 17 against Indiana Tech in Fort Wayne.
