Hudsonville, Mich. - In the first round of the GVSU Invitational the D3 hockey team defeated Calvin College 8-7 in overtime. After an exciting back and forth game the Panthers Justin Welker scored the game winning overtime goal with 1:20 left, to propel them to their third win of the season.

The opening period was full of scoring as Davenport got on the board 42 seconds into the game. Calvin then came back with two unanswered goals before DU put one in the net with 5:26 to go in the period. Calvin quickly scored again before the horn sounded and led after the first period 3-2.

Adam Tomacari started to get hot in the second period as he scored his first of three goals on the night, which was assisted by teammates Ben Duthler and Jon Kuzava. Calvin would also post another goal to led 4-3 going into the third period. In the third period Adam Tomacari completed his hat trick with two more goals after Calvin scored early in the period. Then teammate Sam Swardenski put DU back in the lead with a top shelf slap shot from the top of the point. The lead didn't last long as Calvin answered back with two goals to go up 7-6, before Jordan Steger, assited by Justin Welker, scored with two minutes left to tie the game and force it into overtime.

When it looked like this back and forth game may come to a stalemate, Justin Welker put the puck in the net with 1:20 left to go. This victory propels them to 3-1-0 overall as they head into tomorrow were they will go up against Hope College at 6:00pm for day two of the GVSU Invite.
