Sweaters and Moustaches Lifts Panthers to 13-3 Blowout
Dec. 16, 2007
Grand Rapids, Mich. - On Saturday December 15th, 2007 Davenport University's Athletic Department collected jackets and sweaters for the needy to help those less fortunate through this upcoming winter season. It was also "Duster Weekend" (a tradition for DU Hockey where all the players and coaching staff have a moustache and wear funny sweaters to the game). This takes weeks to prepare for and Davenport athletics collected over 100 jackets and sweaters for this event.
Game two of the series started out much different than the night prior. The first half of the game both teams alternated goals and it had the potential for a down to the wire match-up. The Panthers opened the scoring with a back hand top shelf goal from Adam Thomas assisted by Chad Anguilm and Jeff Kraemer. Moments later, Kevin scored his fourth of the year with a slap shot from the right wing just inside the far post assisted by Chris Green. Eric Troup then scored his first of two on the night on a pass from Rick Gadwa and Justin Poorman. Troup, typically a play-maker is starting to feel more comfortable shooting the puck. Assistant Coach Phil Sweeney stated "If we can get Eric Troup to shoot the puck more he will be very dangerous offensively."
The momentum shifted in Davenport's favor for good when Jon Stolarz scored at the 15:18 mark of the second assisted by Bill McSween and Chad Anguilm. This goal sparked the Panthers as they blew the game wide open scoring 10 unanswered goals. The Panthers made history in the DU record book scoring three goals in 32 seconds at the end of the second period. This flurry of goals started with Eric Troup's sixth of the season and second of the night on a great tic-tac-toe play assisted by line-mates Bobby Collar and Rick Gadwa. Jared Mailloux scored his second of the season from an offensive face-off won by Kevin Doyle. Jared's bar down shot really lifted the Panthers. Thomas completed the flurry with great passing from Chad Anguilm and Jeff Kraemer.
The third period opened the flood gates as the Panthers scored six goals to go on to win 13-3. Kevin Doyle opened the scoring in the third assisted by Justin Welker and Chad Rutzel. Kevin Doyle put on a "Turcotte Stickhandling Clinic" and was finally rewarded for his efforts. Brett Hagen, Bob Collar, Eric Troup (completes the hat trick), Jeff Kraemer and Chad Anguilm finish off the third period scoring for the Panthers.
"I would like to congratulate the officiating crew for today's game. Just like last night's team, they did a fantastic job, said head Coach Paul Lowden. Jeremy Henderson, Jeff Toombs and Randy Sheehan communicate very well with each other and both coaching staffs. We are very fortunate in Grand Rapids to have great officials who take pride in their work."
The Davenport Panthers will be off for the Holidays, returning for practice on January 2nd 2008 to get ready for a home and home series battle against the 2006-2007 ACHA DI National Champions Oakland University Grizzlies starting Friday January 4 at Patterson Ice Center in Grand Rapids, Michigan.
The Davenport University Hockey Team would like to wish their friends and families a Wonderful, Happy and Safe Holiday Season. We look forward to seeing you in 2008.
