Women's Volleyball Begins New Season in GLIAC Tournament

GLIAC Tournament Central

After missing out on playing in the GLIAC Tournament in the fall of 2019, the Davenport women's volleyball team is back in the spring of 2021. Seventh-seeded Davenport will face 10th-seeded Lake Superior State on Friday in the opening round with the first serve set for 1 p.m. inside Saginaw Valley State's James E. O'Neill Jr. Arena. The Panthers won the teams' two regular season meetings, 3-1 and 3-0 on March 5-6, and lead the all-time series, 5-2.

This season's tournament format is different with double elimination and 11 of the league's 12 teams competing (Wayne State out due to Covid-19). If Davenport wins against Lake Superior State, it will move on to play the the No. 2 seed and 20th ranked Northern Michigan, also on Friday, at 7 p.m. in the quarterfinals. If the Panthers fall to the Lakers, they'll fall to the consolation bracket for a match on Saturday at 10 a.m. The event's full schedule can be found at the link above and includes links to follow along with each match live.

Davenport has gone 2-2 all time in the GLIAC Tournament. In the Panthers' first year in the conference in 2017, they dropped their quarterfinal matchup with Northern Michigan, 3-1. In 2018, Davenport made a run to the finals by defeating Ashland, 3-2, and Michigan Tech, 3-2, before falling to No. 6 Ferris State, 3-0, in the championship match. Again, after failing to qualify for the postseason in 2019, Davenport is happy to be back in 2021.
