GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – On Saturday afternoon the Davenport women's tennis team took on Northwestern Ohio in the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference Championship match. Davenport fell behind after doubles and could not rebound as they lost the Racers, 5-2. The Panthers currently sit at 16-10 on the season and will wait to see if they will receive an at-large bid to the NAIA National Championship.
In doubles, the duo of
Puck Luttikhuis and
Alyssa Fuentes got the Panthers off to a strong start as they won, 8-1, at doubles No. 1. Davenport could not hang on to the momentum as they dropped the final two doubles matches, as they trailed, 2-1 heading into singles.
Luttikhuis got Davenport off to another solid start in the singles portion of the match winning 6-4, 6-1, but the Racers will able to grab three straight wins in straight sets at singles three, four and five as they went on to beat the Panthers, 5-2, to win the WHAC Championship and clinch an automatic berth into the NAIA National Championships.
Davenport will now wait to see if they receive an at-large berth into the NAIA National Championships, as they are currently 16-10 on the season and ranked 21st in the NAIA polls.
