GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Davenport men's tennis team returned to action on Thursday night as they faced crosstown rival, No. 25 Aquinas. Davenport fell behind early and they were unable to comeback as Aquinas went on to win the match, 5-3. The Panthers will be back in action on Saturday afternoon as they hit the road for the final time this season as they travel to Lima, Ohio to face Northwestern Ohio at 1 p.m.
To start the match, Aquinas jumped ahead taking a 2-1 lead after doubles, as
Haja Denise and
Steven Vink were the only duo to grab a win in doubles, 8-5. Matheus Carvalho and
Sam Rogerson were unable to win their tiebreaker as they dropped a point at doubles one, 9-8 (9-1).
As the match shifted over to singles, Davenport looked to make a comeback, but Aquinas was able to win at singles one and two to create some separation, but Vink was able to pick the second point for the Panthers with a 6-3, 6-0, win a singles three.
Matthew Boyle won 6-4, 6-2, at singles five, but the Saints were able to win at singles four to secure the win, 5-3.
Davenport falls to 7-10 on the season and they are now 1-1 in the WHAC, while Aquinas moves to 12-5 and is now 1-0 in conference play.
The Panthers will be back in action on Saturday, as they travel to Lima, Ohio for their final road match of the season as they face Northwestern Ohio at 1 p.m.
